Why a Strategic Plan for Special Education?
Special education is not just about students meeting their annual goals and objectives. Rather, it is about each student meeting their greatest potential. We believe that:
each student is capable to learn at high levels;
each student is supported so he or she can learn at high levels, and;
each student feels confident in their abilities
Our special education strategic plan will enable students with exceptional learning needs to access additional resources in a least restrictive setting. It further defines the actions, resources, and practices that maximize student achievement.
During the spring of 2023, Dr. McKinnon arranged special education focus groups to learn about stakeholder experiences in special education. The district used similar techniques to develop a district-wide strategic plan in 2022. Although the plan included Priority 4: meet the needs of all learners, this priority lacked sufficient depth to fully articulate and identify specific actions to improve special education services. Therefore, we developed a dedicated plan to improve special education with 5 priorities.
